Surfrider San Mateo County Chapter carried the Foundation's clean water mission up a creek in early November by teaming with the San Gregorio Environmental Resource Center to raise money for the USGS stream gage. The stream gage monitors turbidity flow to ensure water quality, water quantity and the general health of the environment of San Gregorio Creek, the main creek, fed by a dozen feeder creeks in the San Gregorio watershed. Such quality benefits all water users, residents, and visitors in the watershed.
San Gregorio Store owner, George Cattermole explains simply how Surfrider's involvement in the stream gage project makes sense, "We need to ensure the creek's flowing at a rate of two cubic feet per second, at minimum. More water in the creek, means better water quality, of course, for all the frogs and fishes and wildlife, but also less-concentrated fish poop flowing out to sea for surfers to have to sit in at the line-up." There are half a dozen secret breaks along this strip of coast that surely benefit from the fresh flowing creek. The fundraiser was successful beyond the monies raised, a percentage of which donated to Surfrider. The fundraiser brought out friends such as former Surfrider President Rob Caughlan, member Greg Jones who wore a tee Jim Moriarity gave him after a K59 surf sess in El Salvador, and Angie Anderson who donated her surfboard for Surfrider San Mateo County to auction at our next meeting.
